Oscar Peterson in Liverpool.

July 2006

After thinking that 2005 in Manchester was the one and only time that I would have the chance to see the genius of Oscar Peterson live, I was astonished to find that he was returning, despite his obviously failing health, in 2006 and coming virtually to the doorstep in Liverpool for the 'Summer Pops'! It was obvious that this was one more chance not to be missed. Once again, I managed to get my camera in but the seating position this time was not quite as fortunate.

Oscar's health had deteriorated since the last occasion and he could now only reach the piano with the aid of a walking frame. It was obvious that this would almost certainly be the last opportunity to see the great man in person. Indeed, it proved to be the case, for he died on 23rd December 2007 and the world lost the virtuoso known globally as one of the most talented musicians ever to play jazz piano. I feel enormously privileged to have seen him perform twice.

(These shots have all been reduced but the originals are intact in 3008x2000 format with mildest Jpeg compression)
