Microscopy and Imaging

Scanning electron micrograph of the "business"
end of a mosquito,
taken with a Hitachi S-4700 FESEM at 2.0
KeV, originally at 80x,
at a 60° tilt. The mosquito was
dried under a low vacuum, mounted
on a SEM stub, and coated
with gold palladium. The end of the
proboscis, normally
closed, is open in this image to reveal the
"stinger",
which penetrates the skin. The image was colorized using
Adobe Photoshop.
