Synthesis of An Inhibitor of the Sodium Pump Obtained from Human Placenta

Research team: Dr F. M. D. Ismail & Dr. P.G. Evans

Programme of studies:
This project involves the synthesis of novel bufenolide steroids which can inhibit human Na+/K+ ATPases. We have recently discovered an endogenous biochemical pathway that produces these substances in volume expanded patients. Various routes to late stage intermediates from androsterone acetate and pregneolone are now complete.
